Animation Space

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

This piece of work is the sound files for an animation for another student (David Chen) in Animation Studio 2. I was a short 24 second video of a spaceship lifting off and in a short meeting of 15 minutes and many messages it resulted in a background bass sound and many different door openings and flying. Most of the collaboration was hashed out in the initial messages and meeting. The messages were mainly about what sounds were required so I could think about how I could achieve the potential sounds and whether or not an instrumental track was necessary. David explained it was just the foley at first but in the meeting expressed the desire for a bassy sound. I had made a list of all the parts of the clip and so once we met double checked that these were all the ones and set ahead to make the rest. All I was given was a short sample of a liftoff which needed the slightest stretching.

I worked in Ableton to begin with to create the initial sounds. I used operator initially to create the whooming sound using a sine wave and created a glitching one with using C2 and D2 in MIDI. I also created one with a sharp cut and a lot of noise for a door open. I then sampled an electric coffee grinder which I had recorded previously. I placed this in sampler and pitched it down with MIDI. I did the same for a milk steamer as well. I then found 2 different drum kits that already had unique sound qualities. I used the Blowin Kit with the Bass Stab for the low sound. I used the Hyper Electro Beatbox with the HB-FX-Fazor and used a pitch shift wheel for the sound change.

Initial Sound Creation with Door Open Synth

I then did the initial sound design in Pro Tools. I wasn’t to finish the sound design as he was re-rendering the film as it was being sponsored and was going to be finished in Premier. I worked in a session in 96kHz and 16 bit to have the best syncing to the 30fps of the animation. I placed the video in the session and then inserted all the files I bounced out of Ableton.

The initial sine wave bass sound was used as a background for the piece. It had a large fade in which curved up and cut when the other sine wave was playing. The other sine wave was used when the large doors open with fades. The coffee grinder was used for the large door opening and was a combination of two notes to one note. The initial open was the Bass Stab for the large door.

Sound Design and Time Stretch

For the liftoff sound provided I placed on polyphonic elastic audio and stretch it to the place it finished. This was used with the HB-FX-Fazor for the whirring flight. It was time stretched the same way. The wings opening was the synth hit with the milk steamer. After all of this Spot Mode was used to get the exact time stamps to provide to the animator.

Please note that this video is not the final master so may be unbalanced.

Overall I was really excited for this as it was so much fun and an area I haven't explored much but was a much needed change of pace. David didn't give necessarily any feedback in terms of what was good or needed work but, did state that if he did need anything changed in the future he would contact me once the final render was finished and thanked me for the work.
