Horror "For the Birds"

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

Over the last 6 weeks I have been working with my friend Caelan Harwood to change the Pixar short film 'For The Birds' into a thriller/horror-esque video purely from changing the soundscape. This is that video

This project was quite labour intensive with editing that I have not used in great length before. For a more detailed outline of the work I did below is a video screencapturing the work for this sound replacement.

Okay now onto reflecting on the full project. This project was unique and I wanted to ensure that I could do something that I truely would love to put my name on. Caelan and I had not worked together before however, we had talked about other works we were doing before giving us a basis of understanding each others interests. We both grew up watching Pixar films being young when this short in particular came out with 'Monster's Inc'. Though we didn't want to just repeat what was already there but change it. Caelan suggested a more horror theme and I was sold with it once we shortened the video to the length it is now that it would be possible.

Working with Caelan was a dream in partnership compared to others in the past. We seperated our jobs into mainly music and post-production, myself focusing on the post-production, allowing us to really hone the sounds that would accumulate in the final piece. We both were quick with communicating any information with each other and let each other know if our milestone timeline was being adapted. The music was postponed slightly to after the Foley and SFX recording. This however combined gave us a clear vision of the combination of sound and allowed the voice artist to have a clear idea of the feel of the piece outsideof our brief. The main way that this partnership worked well between Caelan and I was that we get the seperation in our focus allowing myself to make the final creative decisions of the post-production and Caelan made the final creative decisions with the music.

My own workflow in this project has been rocky to say the least. I haven't felt mentally there with my health and that has impacted my work. I ensured though that everything was to a high standard so that our final video was finished with the clear thematic change to not affect Caelan. This has made my work feel forced in comparison to other times. This is also reflected in DRAXX as the work is also forced as well as problems in communication. I attempted to challenge myself to reattempt and succeed at horror as a previous sound replacement I attempted in school was disasterous and so this time I immersed myself in research and I feel like that helped and reflects in the final product. It shows me that I can reattempt a genre and perform to a standard that I like instead of receiving a failing grade from the teacher (I never did well at composition in high school). This is also the first time I have uploaded anything on sites outside of this one which is a step which I enjoyed as in the future makes me want to explain sessions more often as that is what I enjoy seeing from others. By publishing this piece on YouTube it allows outside people to see the work that may not be looking for the other pieces I have done. There are many fan made music videos (example channel Cake Velvet) and other videos in this genre that can change the feel of the clips making it a platform that suits this video living there too.

This project's process may have not been completely on time but still worked as Caelan and I communicated and stayed on top of all changes to the schedule. This may have increased my stress at times but made it manageable as I at least knew what was happening and when. Overall, I am so proud to have created this as this is the first major post-production piece I have done outside of the small spaceship clip I did earlier this year.
