What is media?

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

Media is technically defined as “all print, digital and electronic forms of communication” (Keims et al., 2016). However, this definition is quickly evolving with the impact of technology on society. Culture is the driving force that creates these new platforms and understandings of media (Jenkins, Ford & Green, 2013). Media is an expression of a society and how a person views themselves in it. Without the context of the place and the surroundings of person media struggles to make sense to an outside audience. An example of this was a painting I once saw. It was grey and dull, and silhouettes of buildings could be seen blurred in the landscape, all except for a reddish haze in the centre. It made no sense to me until the artist explained to me that this was his view of the sunrise from his apartment in China due to the smog. This helped create my view that media not only shows a story but a snippet of a lifestyle. Media will always be defined as a print and communication but without the use of expression it never means anything to the viewing party. If this expression is an advertisement or the struggle of abuse, the media is just the means for the story to be shown.

Significant Media to me;

1 – “I’m Fine” GRAY – this song is in Korean, but it is about reminding yourself that you are okay and can take care of yourself. This song was created in a day with all three rappers and the one singer making up there notes to self along the way.

2 – “Why” NF – this song made me want to self-reflect starting with the first question in the song “what’s your definition of success?”. I believe that media that makes you realise you need to improve is essential in developing motivations and reasoning for your words and actions.

3 – YouTube channel “Pop Song Professor” – this entire channel is made on analysing song lyrics and meaning to help develop the viewers own music. This analysis helps me understand more about songs and there place in society.
